Access Control
What is access control?
In terms of building security, access control means the selective restriction of entry to a place, such restriction being controlled by owners or management via the use of authentication devices such as a key, or card and PIN readers which in turn control the operation of door locks or other physical barriers.
A more secure method for access control includes multi factor authentication. An authorised person who requires access must present a physical credential such as a card or tag and a second factor to establish identity. The second factor could be a password, a PIN, or a biometric reading such as a fingerprint confirmation.
There are three factors that may be used for authentication:
There is a significant difference in meaning between the terms "access control" and "secure access control". A person may gain entry to a place by using just a key or a card, yet there is nothing secure about the activity, the person using the key or card could be anyone.
Secure Access Control can only be achieved by the use of biometric content in the authentication process and/or other Two-factor authentication (2FA) method.
